January POM: Karl Jobst
Karl Jobst wins a hotly contested POM to kick off a new year. He set the most World Records in January, and untied Archives 0:55 on both difficulties, raising the bar for the entire elite to shoot at. His other comeback work across the board brings him into the top 10 WR total. Other contenders for this month included Ryan White, Henrik Norgren and Ilari Pekkala, but none of their works matched that of Karl Jobst. Link: POM history for previous winners and overall standings
WR Setters this Month
January 2006 began dramatically with Ryan White taking on the Surface 2 A's long-standing record of 0:52, set by Peter Osterland back in March 2004. Ryan matched the record on the first day of the month, equalling the time attained only by Osterland and Bryan Bosshardt. Just two days later, he surpassed them both with a new low of 0:51, making an early bid for PoM. However the enigmatic Karl Jobst returned to the fray with an unexpected untied on Train A, skipping Wouter Jansen's 1:07 completely with a new time of 1:06. Bryan Bosshardt continued the Train blitz by reducing SA to 1:42, and Train master Henrik Norgren completed the set with a 00 untied of 2:10 on the very same day! The Archives SA and 00 records of 0:56 were set all the way back in 2002, and Michael Kirkness matched them both early in the month. Yet the WRs were quickly taken from him as Karl untied both SA and 00 in a matter of days, surely securing his PoM award with a pair of 0:55s. With the barrier broken, Karl's times were quickly matched, and Henrik and Alex Anderson had restored their 300 point status on the level by the end of the month. Several new ties also appeared on the ranking this month - Ilari Pekkala's times on Dam 00 and all difficulties of Archives elevate him to third by number of WRs (nine behind Wouter and 27 behind Boss). Jimmy Bauer posted Depot A 0:26, and Karl hit his sixth WR in a month with the same time a few days later. There were also ties on Caverns A and SA from Patrik Nilsson and Jim Barrett respectively. - Soo Reams
